Pierce (Inktober 2025-06)

A brush painting of a face in ink and ink wash. The face has a sinister smile, and it makes eye contact with the viewer. It has several piercings: a ring in its eyebrow, a bar in the bridge of the nose, and a stud in one nostril. The left side is generally visible, but the right side of the face is covered in messy ink brush strokes to the point where it is entirely obscured except for a row of teeth.

This particular ink drawing is an evolution of mishaps. I had a vision of a vicious smile, rendered in an extremely stark, jagged, almost cartoony style, but when I tried to sketch it out, I went off course in a few ways… too much detail in the eyes, too much addiction to perspective and realism, and a failure to commit to a white image against a black background (a quality of the image in my head).

Then, as I was trying to splatter some ink for a grungy effect, I inadvertently ran a streak of black ink right up the middle of the drawing. Oops! My only recourse at that point was to plunge half of the face into that streaky black ink coverage that you see in the final.

Oh well. As often happens, the result has a lot of its own chaotic character.

You may notice that I am now more than 10 days behind, and there is no way I will catch up with Inktober this year. That’s fine, I think. I’m really enjoying the days I actually manage to complete, and I might get as far as, like, the 10th or 12th prompt.
